Hello and welcome to Season 4 of The Ick. This season’s theme is DISGUST, and I have two big announcements:
There will be 10+ authors!
We’re going to PRINT!
Instead of being the only author this season, I’m collaborating with my brilliant writer and artist friends to create a print edition. We’ll be covering dating icks and revulsions, neo-reactionaries and polarization, pet peeves and pathological loathing—and much more. The season will culminate in a print magazine (my dream) and a launch party (+ live reading) in San Francisco later this year.
Make sure you’ve subscribed to get the launch party announcements and article updates. And if you’re able, please consider upgrading to a paid subscription ($7-$250), all proceeds will go toward covering our printing costs.
Who’s who
I’m thrilled to feature these incredible writers and the disgusting stories they have to share. Here’s what you can anticipate in Season 4:
Eurydice explores the ick of motherhood and thought policing.
Jake Eaton, editor at Asterisk Magazine and author of Anzalogue, writes about misophonia, extreme disgust triggered by sound.
etirabys analyses the causes and origins of women’s dating icks.
Lydia Laurenson of The New Modality and Solar Light reflects on her entanglement with the neo-reactionary movement.
Nina Katz, author of Bread Apples Milk, and Squelch, writes about nauseating food memories, both physical and emotional.
Deepfates writes on the politics of contagion.
Rhys Lindmark, author and artist behind Ada & Locke, creates comics about disgust’s evolutionary origins.
…plus more surprise guests TBA
In Case You Missed It
If you haven’t been here since the beginning, The Ick has been running for three seasons. Here’s what you missed:
Season 1: Embarrassing Stories
Essays on personal humiliation and life lessons.
Season 2: The Five Senses
How to experience the wonders of sensation with less yuck and more yum. Essays and podcast interviews with experts in somatics, music theory, fine art, qualia and perfumery, and food chemistry.
Season 3: Etiquette
A social survival guide for a post-pandemic world. Exploring where social norms come from and why (if?) etiquette matters today.
Thank you for being here! More very soon.
